Abstract: | The economy strengthens but volatile times are ahead as Lech Walesa faces a tough fight for re-election as president. Colin Jones reports. Poland has been described as reminiscent of Italy - a disconcerting mix of economic resurgence and political volatility. However, like most comparisons, this one does not carry very far. Poland's political turbulence stems from two factors. It has an electoral system which was bequeathed by the communists and it has as president, Lech Walesa. |
