| Abstract: | The 27 countries in post-communist east and central Europe and the former Soviet Union have all made fair progress re-establishing market-based banking and financial sectors in the six years or so since the command economy collapsed. In the past year or two in particular several former Soviet republics have begun to move significantly forward in this area. However, much more still needs to be done before banking and financial services in any part of the region have the breadth and the depth appropriate to a fully functioning market economy. |
