Abstract:Westerners are not sure what to make of Slovakia. Since it broke away from the Czech and Slovak Federation in January 1993, the republic has put on an apparently sparkling economic performance, better even than its Czech neighbour. Indeed, Slovakia's record on economic growth and inflation could hardly be bettered. But, for rather more than a year now, a comfortable balance-of-payments current account surplus has given way to mounting deficit. By itself, this is not exceptional.
