Abstract:Japan's 87 commercial banks have had their most profitable year, doubling their profits earned just four years ago. The causes are simple: falling yen interest rates, booming Tokyo bond and equity markets and a spreading international reach. City banks have offset weak corporate-loan demand by carving out greater shares in the foreign exchange and bond markets. Record profits raised the average pre-tax return on assets and the average ratio of shareholders' funds to assets significantly, but these ratios are still low by international criteria and Japanese risks.
