Abstract:The year 1986 was not a good one for the world banking community. Most banks were able to strengthen their balance sheets, but many banks' profitability dropped. (Both tendencies characterize about three fifths of the big banks.) The improvements in the capital ratios are rather weak. The statistics critically depend on the exchange rates, e.g. because of the sharp rise of the yen, the first five positions are occupied by the Japanese in dollar terms.
