Abstract:Innovation in products comes about through R and D. Now however, it is time to focus on innovation in R and D. An award-winning research into a new model for thinking about and organizing R and D is reported. The old model of research moves in straight lines, substituting one technology for another. Technology fusion - such as optoelectronics or mechatronics - cuts across fields to create entirely new products and sometimes even new industries. The main characteristics of techno-fusion are highlighted and three management principles that make it work are considered. These principles that make it work are considered. These principles cover demand articulation, use of many and sophisticated instruments for collecting information, cross-industry R and D.
