Abstract:This paper examines the problem of estimating demand for new product in the presence of biased demand projections. Respondents are often asked to estimate their future demand for new products. Projected demand can exhibit systematic bias because when respondents like the product, they may exaggerate their demand. In this paper a computationally tractable procedure is developed that corrects for a general form of systematic bias in demand projections. The general form is characterized by a monotonic transformation of project demand, and as a special case, covers exaggeration bias.
