Abstract:The aim of this paper is to gain a better understanding about employees' role in new product development projects. Nine individuals' tasks and participation in different phases of the invention process in one organization were analyzed on the basis of in-depth interviews with participants and their managers and colleagues. The paper identifies four different divisions of labor in the new product development process; inventors, champions, implementers and innovators. The paper also documents the differences in skills and characteristics between these different specialist types.
