Abstract:This study advances the notion of collateral (henceforth as: coll.) learning (as: lrgn.) that assesses knowledge acquisition internal to a firm in the alliance. In order to examine its antecedents, this study builds on the behavioural theory of the firm, proposing strategic importance and performance vulnerability as the motivational components (as: cmpts.) and organizational similarity and alliance experience as the awareness cmpts. Results from more than 130 alliance firms suggest that both the motivational and awareness cmpts. are important in influencing coll. lrgn. in new product alliances. Specifically, to develop coll. lrgn., firms should have extensive alliance experience and an acknowledged stake in their alliance partners.
