Abstract: | Using a case-study approach, this paper analyzes new product development processes in five Austrian semiconductor companies, to understand the dynamics of self-organization in the fuzzy front end of innovation. The authors find that self-organization mechanisms support those new product development processes that are managed formally, top-down. Many of the cases that were examined demonstrated bottom-up processes running parallel to the formal processes. In these activities, employees initiated innovation without any explicit order. In the case companies, the informal innovation processes often remained secret until they we're mature enough to introduce to the management. |
