Abstract:A survey of firms in the chemical, computer, and pharmaceutical industries provides insight into investment decision practices under environmental and/or social uncertainty. "Normal" and exceptional causes of uncertainty are differentiated. A number of new product environmental/social impacts are mentioned. The practices in use were found very simple, appropriate only when a new product is very similar to existing ones. Time horizons greater than five but less than ten years occurred in 27 firms (42,8%). The methods which are used most often in the process of the development are compared on the base of their perceived advantages and disadvantages across the stages of identification, measurement and integration.
