Abstract:This research provides insights about managers of the former USSR under perestroika: how they viewed their jobs, and how they perceived the degree and types of decision-making autonomy they had. It also examines how this level of autonomy compared to the pre-perestroika period. Having a better understanding of their counterparts in the former USSR should reduce the uncertainty of Western managers who will deal with them in 1990s. Amid the uncertainty there are signs of optimism. The study has concluded that managers of enterprises in the former USSR were rather optimistic about life.
