Abstract:The last 10 years have seen a widespread and enthusiastic call for convergence in theoretical approaches and research traditions. This call for convergence has focused on the mass communication audience and generated a body of research that draws upon diverse theoretical and methodological traditions which had hitherto been more concerned with texts or production. There has been some convergence between the major divisions within mass communication research: critical and administrative traditions. The article discusses issues now coming to the fore that could not have been anticipated and whose analysis draws on contemporary developments in deconstruction and social theory.
