Abstract: | The most important factors influencing the success or failure of corporate innovations in the European semi-conductor and pharmaceutical industries are determined. The firms under investigation are divided into two groups, the members of one having a good innovation record ("prospectors") and of the other a poor one ("would-be innovators"). A study of publicly available data, interviews and answers to questionnaires shows that successful companies concentrate their efforts, avoid diversification, define clear goals but allow R and D freedom on how to pursue them, eliminate bureaucracy, revise plans frequently, integrate activities, and ensure that researchers work in a supportive working environment. |
