The model is the US semiconductor industry. The company structure is compared with the Japanese one. Personal computing is described as a branch lowering the minimum initial costs of obtaining systems technology. The structure of the semiconductor and the software industry is outlined. Research and development costs are analyzed. Big integrated corporations are described as the only institutions likely to protect and develop intellectual property and invest in the training and career development of key people.
