Abstract: | Recent court decisions have made it clear that employers can be held liable for sexual harassment when an employee's work environment is perceived to be hostile. Even employees who were not themselves victims of sexual harassment are winning lawsuits. The USA Equal Employment Opportunity Commission guidelines, issued in 1980, are explained. A 1988 survey conducted by Working Woman magazine is reported. The difficulty associated with winning is reflected in the findings. It cannot be overemphasized how important an effective policy statement and complaint system are to help insulate an employer from liability. It is equally important, however, that the employer take prompt and appropriate remedial measures if a problem exists. |
