Abstract:This study proposes a fixed-effect panel methodology for simultaneously taking into account both total factor productivity (TFP) convergence and the traditional neoclassical type of convergence. Based on analysing of a sample of Italian regions from 1963 to 1993, it is found strong evidence that both mechanisms were at work during the process of aggregate regional convergence observed in Italy up to the mid-1970s. In addition, it is found that this paper's TFP estimates are highly positively correlated with standard human capital measures, the latter not being statistically significant in growth regressions. This evidence confirms one of the hypotheses of the Nelson and Phelps approach.
