Abstract:When the Brazilian economy fell apart, Ricardo Semler's factories had to cut staff and give more work to subcontractors. Rather than work with strangers, Semler gave contracts to his own workers, offering them generous severance and leasing them company machines. In the article he describes this experiment in unsupervised, in-house, satellite production, which saved the company and its workers.
