Abstract:A company forced to downsize must take care that its managers know how to function in the new environment. A three-step method is recommended. First , executives must make efforts to define objectively their company's current objectively their company's major problems and ask whether these problems are new or just the debris from past years of corporate torpor. The second step: What should be done about them? This calls for changes in what is done, who does what, and how things are to be accomplished. The third step in maintaining managerial motivation is increasing the management skills of surviving supervisors and managers.
