Abstract:The beginning of changes in the East German industry after political changes is shown through several examples. Some signs of transforming an economy are the rising imports, and the imperative need to improve industry standards and products. The outdated products cannot hope to compete with Western alternatives. It is the conclusion of managers of several East German factories: Kurt Roeske, head of "Tro", east Germany's biggest transformer factory; Lutz Bojahr, Stern Radio; Peter Jargstorf, Planeta /manufacturing of printing presses/, Guenter Urban, Berlin-Chemie. In spite of the hopes, the sorry state of the economy and underdeveloped infrastructure have kept many Western investors away.
