Abstract:The Japanese system of subcontracting is even more complex than it is generally thought. The recent trajectories of evolution observed in sectors associated with advanced technologies are revealed. International comparisons based on a survey of 11 French and 20 English companies are made. The classic trajectory is examined: some subcontractors (those in Japan have virtually exclusive ties with one customer) evolve from their position as sub-assembler, for example, to that of "quasi-manufacturer". However, other trajectories are also emerging: some subcontractors promote their own technologies; new industrial networks are being created that act both as "incubators" and a factor for new types of partnership.
