Abstract:On the nature of family owned businesses (FOBs), there can be found two major perspectives through literature: 1. FOBs have unique characteristics of stewardship, and 2. FOBs are unusually subject to stagnation. In this paper, the merits of the two perspectives are examined through an empirical study of only small firms owned and managed by their founder. Compared are FOBs with non-FOBs. There is found significant support for all three aspects of the stewardship perspective of FOBs. Yet, no support is found for any elements of the stagnation perspective.
