Abstract:The author states that while there is no shortage of 'quick and dirty' surveys on computer and Internet use, most of these studies do not permit any kind of in-depth analysis of the socio-economic determinants for the use of these new technologies. The paper provides the data from survey that allows this type of structural analysis, although data on Internet use have only been collected indirectly so far. The paper also considers the following subjects: 1) Households with personal computers; 2) Internet use in the home. In conclusion the author states that high-income parents provide their children with access to a computer much more friendly than do lower income parents.
