Abstract:The paper states that the David and Goliath battle between Apple and Microsoft for control of our desktop technology seemed lost until the iMac came along. The authors answer the question whether accountants are being enticed along with everyone else. In the grey office landscape, Apple's desktop computers stand out like exotic tropical birds. Its new desktop computer ranges - the brightly-colored iMac for the consumer market and the Powerbook G3 aimed at commercial users - were widely credited with rescuing the company's fortunes in the late 90s. Launched in 1998, the iMac was the US's best-selling computer for most of the autumn of that year, pushing up Apple sales far beyond analysts' expectations.
