Abstract:Two case histories illustrate the ways in which the learning needs of managers can be met by using the real world and real problems. Traditional management development program structures are considered and compared with company-tailored development programs. The new focus on the practical applications of theory in business schools is examined. The action learning methodology is described in its application to top managers' learning. On of the most successful methods, the Chief Executive Set, is used as an illustration. The problem of how managers tackle the learning process is assessed and the influence of job content, organizational culture and past experience is appreciated.
