Abstract:Much that is said in this interview relates to the problems caused by the confrontation between the west and the islamic world. Akbar stresses that it is politically very important to achieve an understanding of differences between the two cultural systems. In elaborating his argument he recontextualizes the debate on postmodernity from an islamic perspective and relates to the redefinition of muslim identities that is now under way. He offers a rather disenchanted view of the 'demonic' qualities of western media while at the same time urging a measured appraisal of the western culture by muslims. Finally he reflects upon his experience both as a muslim and an anthropologist, of working with a television production team inside the BBC.
