| Abstract: | This article examines the development of apprenticeship training and its decline over the last quarter century. This decline is explained in terms of the interaction between the removal of institutional supports and a failure by employers to sustain the system. The advantages and disadvantages of apprenticeship training are considered. Apprenticeship training is chosen for analysis because historically it was the most important method of training for most manual workers. |
