Abstract:This article ascribes the failures of entire industries not only to the mirocultures of single organizations, but also to interorganizational macrocultures: beliefs that are shared by managers across organizations. It proposes that value added networks linking organizations into collectivities both induce and reflect the existence and persistence of homogeneous macrocultures. In turn, homogeneous macrocultures increase the level of inertia these organizations experience, influence the inventiveness and the diffusion of innovations, and increase the similarity of memeber organizations' strategy.
