Abstract:This article discusses the role of intermediate governance structures between vertically related industries in the context of technological innovation. In the USA, these relations correspond to the neoclassical contracting model. In Japan interfirm relations are more likely to involve relational contracting. The authors focus upon the kinyu keiretsu type of relational contracting between firms. They compare the contractual arrangements to manage the development of new technology by 46 USA and 27 Japanese semiconductor equipment firms.
