Abstract: | Facing growing competition, the new boss at Malaysia's Proton is seeking to transform the company into a world class car maker in double-quick time. In the automotive world, new-product launches are typically glitzy, gaudy events, complete with laser lights etc. A far bigger challenge is to make Proton a car maker of international standing. There are risks, the strategy could turn Proton into a jack of all technologies and master of none. Still, the new approach seems to be working - for the moment - in the Malaysian market.
