Abstract:Derivative instruments have become an increasingly important part of the product set used by depository institutions to manage their interest rate risk exposure. As interest rates have become more volatile, depository institutions have recognized the importance of interest rate futures and interest rate swaps in reducing risk and achieving acceptable financial performance. Many researchers have documented that interest rate risk and its effect on the volatility of earnings has a significant adverse impact on the common stock returns of depository institutions to reduce their lending activities.
