Abstract: | Microsoft moves carefully to shore up China business. It might sound harmless. But a delicate part of characters in the Chinese language version of Microsoft's flagship Windows 95 operating system threatened to scramble the company's long-term plans for China. Only through deft damage control has the software giant managed to head off a crisis. Things looked bad for Microsoft when Beijing officials discovered the phrase "communist bandits" embedded in the Windows 95 Chinese-character selection system which was designed in arch-nemesis Taiwan. |
