Abstract:Its recovery is far from complete. Yoshikazu Kawana never thought he would have to be a hatchet man. Yet like every other top manager at Nissan Motor Co., the executive vice-president for overseas operations has been cutting costs relentlessly ever since the company reported $1.3 billion in losses two years ago. Morale at Nissan has plunged as the company cut almost 12,000 employees in Japan, Spain and the U.S. from the payroll. Nissan even became the first Japanese company since World War II to close a plant in Japan.
