| Abstract: | Asians want a clearing system for their bond markets to rival Euroclear in Europe. Five years of debate don't seem to have taken the Asiaclear concpet very far. It has been debated at Asian Development Bank (ADB) meetings since the early 1990s and cropped up again lately at gathering in Fukuoka. However there have been some new developments: HongKongBank has registered Asiaclear as a trademark. The Asia-wide settlement system has never been known anything else than Asiaclear, but there may be a strong desire by governments to use that term. |
