Abstract:In spring 1996 the DIW published a comparison of the importance of services in the American and the German economy that was based not on a classification by branch, but by occupational activity. The study showed that Germany did not lag significantly behind the USA in terms of the relative importance of service activities. These calculations have now been extended and brought up to date. Specifically, the analysis is not only restricted to to the number of employees, but also covers the income earned by these activities.
