Abstract:This will go down as a bumper year for the structural reorganisation of the Nordic - and especially the Swedish - financial services industries. Most of the action has taken place in Sweden, where the scene has been transformed by series of mergers. Norway has been characterised by merger attempts which failed, notably the proposal to merge the country's premier insurance group, Storebrand, with the second-largest commercial bank, Christiania Bank, which was stopped by Storebrand's shareholders in June. In November an attempt by Union Bank of Norway (Sparebank NOR), the savings bank, to acquire Fokus, the Trondheim-based commercial bank, also fell through.
