Abstract: | Based on an agency theory framework this paper examines the choice of small stock corporations without exchange listings between being audited and not being audited. For small corporations such audits are not required by law. Univariate analysis shows the following results: Small stock corporations with higher debt/total assets ra- tios are more likely to be audited. Manager-controlled cor- porations are more likely to be audited than owner-control- led corporations. Firm size (in terms of total assets) in- creases the probability that a corporation will voluntarily hire an external auditor. Because of missing data a multivariate analysis was not possible. |
