Abstract:Self-Organization versus Detailed Organizational Design. Following traditional organization theory, managers try to obviate the increasing complexity and dynamics of environmental parameters with more minutely planned organization structures. But it seems that a detailed organizational design fails and is not able to cope with the environmental demands. Therefore it is not astonishing, that self-organizing of structures has gained widespread popularity in recent years discussion. But, partly the discussion seems to be too euphoric and obfuscating. In this article three often discussed concepts of self-organization are analyzed, respecting their potential in solving the problem of generating complexity-appropriate structures.
