Abstract:To explore how hotels can improve their productivity, the authors studied two prominent hotel chains' individual North American properties. They found that decisions about a hotel's size, service orientation, strategic orientation, and ownership and management arrangements affect a numer of labor- and capital- productivity measures. Employees of large, company-owned hotels generate more sales revenue and net profits than do their counterparts in smaller of franchised hotels.
