Abstract:As the dust settles after two weeks of tempestuous negotiations at the World Summit for Sustainable Development (WSSD), the author assesses exactly what measures have been agreed upon and where global business, governments and non-government organizations are heading on the issue of sustainable development. The paper states that the common thread of argument at last month's Earth Summit is that there was a lot of talk, but very little action. Although accountants are well placed to argue the business case for sustainable development, they are seldom involved in the environmental or sustainability management initiatives. The aim of the summit, organized by the United Nations, was to reconcile development and economic growth with environmental sustainability.
