Abstract:A conceptual model of the career horizon problem of CEOs approaching retirement is developed and discussed specifically as to engagement in international acquisitions (hereafter as: int-aqs). Using a sample of 293 U.S. firms over a 5-year period from 1995 to 1999, it is found among others that a longer CEO career horizon is associated with a higher likelihood of int-aqs. etc. The study raises important considerations about the implications of CEOs' equity and in-the-money option holdings on firm risk taking.
