Abstract:This study theorizes and empirically illustrates how the Olympic Games mega-event configures relational and symbolic systems within the host city (hereafter as: h-c). The study focuses on a field at the level of the local geographic community exploring how city character and traditions enable both persistence and change in institutional elements. Two exploratory studies are presented. The first shows how the event of the Olympics is rooted in the local field of the h-c. but varies by communities. The second explores the dynamics of configuring the field of one Olympic city: Atlanta, the h-c. of the 1996 Olympic Games. There is appendix titled as 'Olympic legacy by host cities, 1972-2006'.
