Abstract:This paper aims at showing that following from the premise that knowledge (here as: knwl.) comprises the fundamental source of competitive advantage, provided are results of a meta-analysis exploring whether and how alliance performance (as: all-perf.) is influenced by the role knwl. plays in a strategic alliance. Based on findings, it is suggested that the level of risk associated with the environment of the alliance partners joining forces does not moderate the relationship btw. the various roles of knwl. and all-perf., while the magnitude and type of interfirm cohesiveness enjoyed or endured by the alliance participants does materially impact all-perf. These performance differences suggest that knowledge management (KM) strategies matter more than environmental factors etc.
