Abstract:This study compares the salaries of higher education (here as: HE) teaching professionals (here as: profls.) in the U.K. with those of other comparable profls. Academic salaries are compared to a range of occupational groupings viewed as similar to academics, in terms of unobserved characteristics. HE teaching profls. are found to earn lower earnings than most public sector graduates. They do particularly poorly compared to most other comparable profls. Especially, academic earnings compare poorly to those in the legal professions, consultant physicians and dental practitioners both in the public and private sectors. However, some public sector workers do worse than HE academics, e.g. further education (FE) teachers.
