Abstract:The paper investigates employer cooperation in the provision of training in the UK and Australia, which have market-based training systems with little cooperative behaviour expected. Cooperative interfirm arrangements are shown to be important, especially for the supply of intermediate level skills. The research bases on the analysis of surveys and statistical data. The paper compares the development of group training. Between the two countries some striking differences exist, in terms of the actual employment and direct training of apprentices. The arrangements are heavily dependent upon government funding in both countries.
