Abstract:The basic beliefs and assumptions shared by members of an organization are analyzed from a culture perspective. Special attention is given to intergroup conflicts,ineffective meetings, communication breakdowns in face-to-face relationships,and socialization failures. Four primary issues of corporate culture are discussed: consensus on core mission,primary tasks, manifest and latent functions; consensus on means: consensus on criteria for measuring results; developing a common language and conceptual categories. The most powerful mechanisms for embedding and reinforcing culture are presented. Leadership as the ability to manage culture is emphasized.
