Abstract:Cooperation is analyzed from both an economic and organizational perspective. It is shown that reputation is an important mechanism for sustaining cooperative behavior. The analysis is applied to equity joint ventures. Joint ventures are attractive when the exploitation of internalization economies is constrained by economies of scale in internalized facilities and by obstacles to merger. Some types of joint venture are much more cooperative than others. The most cooperative include collaborative research ventures, whilst the least cooperative include networked off-shore processing operations.
