| Abstract: | The transmission and marketing of natural gas over much of Western Europe has been entrusted to state-owned, or state controlled, entities which generally emerged from the 19th century town gas industry orientated to limited and local markets. Growth has been limited and there is a massive under-utilization of available gas resources. Recent developments and the present situation demonstrate that there is a great deal of inertia in the gas market, partly because this reflects the interests of the main actors in the system, and partly because there is no effectively organized pressure group whose aim is to achieve fundamental change in the structure of the gas market. |
