Abstract:Managers engaged in fierce competitive battles might study defeat - their own and that of competitors - to sharpen their strategic thinking. In business, as in war, defeat is rooted in the looser's strategy. Some important parallels for business strategists are presented. The roots of failure are embedded in the way a particular military force is organized to plan and operate (e.g., in Pearl Harbor). Organizational learning means changing the routines that regulate corporate activity, communication and use of information. The best intelligence reveals little unless you understand what your enemy is fighting for and how. Great leaders need to help their organizations change basic premises in midbattle.
