Abstract:In the first article of a series the motivation for addressing this issue at present time is discussed. Based on consideration of thermodynamic impacts of post-industrial energy-use, a question is raised: do renewable energy technologies offer the hope of providing clean, long-term energy options for the 21st century or do they present only false promises which have no significant hope of realization in the foreseeable future. The history of the different forms of energy and the consequences of using them are described, the environmental problems that currently face the world are enlisted.
